Downtown Wilmington is the most obvious choice for such a place. In fact, over a hundred years ago, Wilmington had a flourishing commercial Downtown with an enviable market house. Recently however, Downtown seems to be excelling in other areas such as the Dining and Nightclub experience. An active daily market, which employs the most basic form of retail, might just be the boost Downtown needs. It would help create a well rounded mix and stimulate other business as a result.
It's true--every city needs a market. All over the country, the most vibrant and dynamic cities all have one thing in common: they boast a thriving Public Market. Nothing more than a permanent market structure in a prominent spot. It's a simple place for farmers and craftspeople alike to trade their goods. An ever-changing and lively place that evokes a true sense of place,Wilmington is a city in the market for a market!
Meet the Downtown Neighbors
The first open forum was Wednesday February 10th and the turnout was fantastic!
All the attendees had great questions, valid concerns & creative suggestions. Thank you to everyone who participated!
This was the introduction of the idea to see if this is something worth pursuing further and it seems the general consensus was in favor of the proposal.
The next public presentation will be to the Residents of Old Wilmington on March 10th at 7pm, Tileston School.
